“G” like Gold

Mercedes-Benz and Macho. Two concepts that are not compatible. If some frenetic engineer developed a way to turn testosterone into a car, no doubt the result would be the G-Class. And indeed it did happen in 1979 when the German car manufacturer introduced the ‘Geländewagen’ (terrain vehicle) with an unexpected cuboid design and a beastly engine. Mercedes’ original plan was to build the G-Class as a military vehicle, with subsequent discussions with Austrian Steyr-Daimler-Puch resulting in a civilian version with “uncompromising on- and off-road capabilities”. Luxury has not been absent in its 44 years of life, and the German SUV continues to turn heads in its class.
