Salvador Dal\u00ed’s eccentric house in Catalonia’s Costa Brava is the subject of ‘Casa Dal\u00ed’, a new book published by Apartamento with photographs by Coco Capit\u00e1n and testimonials by Spanish architect \u00d2scar Tusquets, who collaborated with Dal\u00ed.<\/p>\n

Dali bought it in the 1930s, a small fishing hut in the Mediterranean village of Portlligat, and with his wife, Gala, worked on the building over the following decades to redesign and expand its compact structure, incorporating several adjacent huts into the house.<\/p>\n

He described the house as \u201ca real biological structure [\u2026]. Each new pulse in our life had its own new cell, its own room.\u201d Since the artist’s death in 1989, the house has been preserved by the Fundaci\u00f3 Gala-Salvador Dal\u00ed, which operates the site as a museum, preserving the interiors and grounds as the artist left them.<\/p>\n

The house is built as a maze, with narrow corridors and level changes throughout, as well as differently shaped windows that look out over Portlligat Bay. “Portlligat is the place of production, the ideal place for my work,” said the artist.<\/p>\n

The house is filled with furniture curated by Gala, objects the couple collected throughout their years in that house, and works of art by Dali.<\/p>\n
