Overlooking the Puster Valley in South Tyrol, Castel Badia transforms a medieval castle with more than a thousand years of history into a distinctive hospitality destination. Also known as Schloss Sonnenburg, the historic complex reopened as a boutique hotel in December 2025 following an extensive restoration that preserves its architectural character.
Castel Badia: Alpine Heritage Reimagined
Architecture studio Null17 and Droulers Architecture, working alongside designer Marta Ferri, bring together original frescoes, Romanesque vaults, and Gothic details with natural materials, timber, earthy tones, and contemporary furnishings. The 28 individually designed rooms and suites retain their own character, while the dining spaces celebrate the regional cuisine of South Tyrol.
The experience is completed by a spa inspired by the castle’s monastic past, heated pools, and gardens designed for quiet moments within the Alpine landscape. Castel Badia offers a compelling example of how historic architecture can embrace contemporary luxury without losing its authenticity.
