James Bond Scubacraft SC3

The Scubacraft SC3 represents one of the most distinctive examples of marine engineering and design in recent years. Developed as a hybrid vehicle capable of operating both on the surface and underwater, the SC3 combines speedboat technology with submersible diving capability, creating an entirely different approach to marine transportation.

Its construction is based around an aerodynamic and hydrodynamic monocoque body, with styling that resembles a futuristic concept vehicle more than a conventional watercraft. On the surface, it is powered by a jet propulsion system paired with a 1,498cc Kawasaki engine, delivering high-speed performance and rapid response. Underwater, the primary engine shuts down and four electric thrusters take over, allowing controlled and quiet movement at depths of up to approximately 30 meters.

The diving process relies on a buoyancy-control system integrated into the structure through inflatable elements within the hull. As these are deflated, water enters the rear section of the craft, enabling the transition from surface mode to full underwater navigation. The experience resembles an open underwater platform rather than a traditional mini-submarine, as occupants use standard scuba equipment while submerged.

The SC3’s visual identity became even more recognizable through its connection with the world of James Bond and the film Spectre, where it appeared inside Q’s workshop at Pinewood Studios. For the production, its original yellow finish was replaced with a matte black exterior that reinforced the vehicle’s industrial and stealth-inspired appearance. This prototype is believed to be the only surviving SC3 ever built.
