Peter Lindbergh returns with Shadows on the Wall, a new TASCHEN edition bringing together a remarkable selection of previously unpublished photographs created for the celebrated 2017 Pirelli Calendar.
Selected from more than 37,000 images, Lindbergh’s photographs feature fourteen of the most prominent actresses of their generation, including Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore, Charlotte Rampling, Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet, Léa Seydoux, Penélope Cruz, Rooney Mara, Uma Thurman and Zhang Ziyi. His black-and-white portraits move away from the traditional conventions of fashion photography, focusing instead on personality, expression and the presence of each woman.
“What is merely beautiful has always bored me. I’m interested in what is powerful and real,” he once said, a phrase that perfectly captures the philosophy behind his work. For Lindbergh, beauty became compelling when it was connected to something real.
TASCHEN’s new 45th Edition is published as a 512-page hardcover and offers another opportunity to discover a lesser-known side of a photographer who profoundly shaped the modern image of women in fashion. Shadows on the Wall is a reminder that, in Lindbergh’s most powerful portraits, beauty does not lie in the perfection of the image, but in the presence of the person within it.
